to find food safe and easy
The range of plastics, the food quality and also detect with metal detectors is low. Here, the food industry wants for their machines, a variety of such materials. For the first time a manufacturer offers materials based on PE, POM and PA6.

Plates and round bar from MD-modified PE-UHMW: Wear-resistant plastics for food contact equipment
Photo quadrant Lenzburg, Switzerland (mg) – Quadrant Engineering Plastic Products (Quadrant EPP) has extended its range of PE, POM and PA6 to Metal Detectable versions (MD-modified) that are also food safe. It can now also processing machines in the food industry are equipped with these plastics.

Quadrant EPP is based in Switzerland Lenzburg, according to figures provided by the first manufacturer to come into contact with food approved, metal detectable plastic material based on polyethylene (PE), polyoxymethylene (POM) and polyamide (PA6) offers.

The food processing industry requires wear-resistant plastic parts that appeal to its material metal detectors: fragments or particles of the machine components, which dissolve possibly in the manufacturing process and fall into the food must be easy to spot – metal detectors will be used here most often.

The three new MD-modified plastics Tivar MD are based on ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), Acetron MD on the basis of POM and Nylatron MD on the basis of PA6. Acetron MD and MD Nylatron are available in blue, to allow addition of the metal detection and an optical detection, detection by X-rays is also possible.

All materials offer the required detectability of metal up to 3 mm ³ small particles. Each of them is permitted under food law with EU Directive 2002/72/EC and the standards of the FDA and also offers several specific benefits, including a high impact and wear resistance and good machinability. Thanks to the good machinability of the material can also design and manufacture complex parts.

“We have in the development of metal detectable engineering thermoplastics recognized early on that customers need a wide range of materials. It is simply not possible to develop a single plastic for all kinds of requirements, “explains Dr. Stephan Glander, Global Director of Research & Market Development at Quadrant EPP. “We are pleased to offer the food processing industry, materials that allow for very small fragments of a metal detection, and this without compromising the material properties of the base material. We are determined to expand our offerings in the future. ”
